His Eminence Attends the Annual Oriental Orthodox–Roman Catholic Consultation
The annual consultation between the Oriental Orthodox Churches and the Roman Catholic Church in the USA was held at the Cardinal Spellman Retreat Center in the Bronx, New York on Wednesday, September 30 and Thursday October 1. Participants came from the Oriental Orthodox Churches (Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian and Syriac Orthodox) and the Roman Catholic Church. Our Church was represented by His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, Very Rev.Fr. John Meno and Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun. The meetings were co-chaired by the two co-chairmen His Excellency Bishop Howard Hubbard of Albany, NY. His Eminence Archbishop Aphrem offered the opening prayer at the start of the meeting.
As per the agenda of the gathering tow major items were discussed :
The “Nature, Constitution and Mission of the Church” – The January 2009 agreed statement of the International Joint Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Catholic Church and the Oriental Orthodox Churches was introduced during the meeting by Fr. Roberson followed by Oriental Orthodox responses.
The other major topic of discussion was: “Fostering Vocations in Our Churches” presented by Fr. Luke M. Sweeney, Director of Vocations, New York Archdiocese. The Oriental Orthodox response to the presentation was given by Fr. Stephan of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
During the gathering all delegates had the opportunity to report on major events taking place in their respective churches. They also prayed together in during a vesper service conducted by the Roman Catholic Delegation.
