The Annual United Nations Prayers 2009
On Monday evening, October 26, 2009, the ninth annual Eastern and Oriental Orthodox UN Prayer Service was celebrated at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in New York City presided over by His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome and Ecumenical Patriarch. This yearly event is cosponsored by the Standing Conference of the Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas and the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches in America. The Oriental Orthodox Churches were represented at the service by Their Eminences Archbishop Khajag Barsamian of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim of the Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church for the Eastern United States, Archbishop Mor Titus Yeldho of the Malankara Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church in North America, Archbishop Abune Zachariah of the Ethiopian Orthodox Archdiocese of New York and His Grace Bishop David of the Coptic Orthodox Church. His Eminence was accompanied by several clergymen faithful members of the Archdiocese.
His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America addressed a warm word of welcome to all and especially expressed his profound gratitude to His All Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew for presiding over the evening’s service. The official address of the evening was given by Strobe Talbott, President of the Brookings Institution. In his remarks to the assembly, His All Holiness expressed his great joy to see the two families of Orthodox Churches gathered together to celebrate and recognize the vital work of the United Nations for world peace and the environment. The ceremony was attended by several hundred persons including a large number of UN ambassadors and staff. The greetings of the UN General Secretary were read to the gathering during the service.
