Annual Seniors Celebration
On Sunday the 5th of September 2010, the Annual Celebration, in honor of the senior members of our Archdiocese, was held at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Teaneck, New Jersey.
Over sixty senior parishioners of seventy- five years and older, from the local New Jersey parishes, participated in this year’s event. They were accompanied by members of their families. Also present was the Very Rev. Fr. Samuel Akdemir, a senior clergy of the Archdiocese of Istanbul, Turkey and his wife. Fr. Samuel was introduced by His Eminence Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim as a “guest of honor”.
Several seniors took part in the evening prayer service by reading psalms and scripture readings. During the service, His eminence welcomed all, thanking them for their hard work and sacrifices on behalf of their families. He emphasized their role as parents and grandparents reminding them of the influence they can exert on their grandchildren. He asked them to help the Archdiocese by encouraging their grandchildren to be open toward God’s calling to the vocation of priesthood in harmony with this year’s Archdiocese’s focus on the theme of Promoting Vocations to the priesthood among our youth.
At the end of his sermon, His Eminence distributed gifts to all participants as a token of appreciation for their constructive role in the life and witness of the Church. This year’s gifts were crosses made of olive wood, produced by our Syriac people in the Holy Land. Present also were; Very Rev. Fr. Shamoun Asmar of Mor Barsawmo Chruch in Wyckoff, NJ and Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun of the St. Mark’s Cathedral.
Following the prayer service, all were invited to dinner served in the lower hall of the Cathedral.
We express our thanks to Mrs. Samira Yunan and Mrs. Hulia Sayanlar and to all those who helped them organize this year’s event.
