Ordination of Deacons in St. James of Nisibin Church, Corpus Christi, Texas
On Sunday, February 5, 2012, His Eminence, Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim, celebrated the Holy Qurobo (Divine Liturgy) at St. James of Nisibin parish in Corpus Christi, Texas. During the well-attended Liturgy Service His Eminence ordained five Qoruye (readers), they included: Malak Jack Afram, Maurice Jack Afram, David George Ghabeli, David Haysam Dawood and Matthew Haysam Dawood.
In his sermon, His Eminence spoke about service to the church. The Archbishop stressed the importance and privilege of the role of deacons in the life of the church. He encouraged the newly ordained Qoruye (readers) to study the Bible, better their relationship with the Lord and understand their commitment to the Mother Church of Antioch. After the celebration, His Eminence congratulated the deacons, their families and the parish, and joined them for a meal prepared by the Ladies of St. James of Nisibin Church.
On Saturday, February 4th, the Archbishop met with the Qoruye candidates and after prayers and blessings, explained to them their new duties and responsibilities according to our Holy Syriac Orthodox Church doctrines and rites. In a Q & A session, he answered their questions and those of the parishioners that were in attendance. At that same time, His Eminence emphasized the importance of service to the Holy Altar wanting them to clearly understand that this is indeed an honor for each of them and they should commit themselves and be diligent in fulfilling their new duties.
Mr. Joseph Afram of the parish of St. James of Nisibin hosted a dinner in his residence and all were invited to have an opportunity to converse with His Eminence.
