The Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Eastern United States held its Annual Clergy Retreat on March 4-8, 2012, in St. Mary’s Villa Convent, Sloatsburg, New York. His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim presided over the Retreat, which was attended by the clergy from all the parishes of the Archdiocese. The theme of this year’s retreat was: “Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful” (I Corinthians 4:1-2).

On Wednesday, March 7, 2012, the Archdiocese Executive Council held its monthly meeting at St. Mary’s Villa in Sloatsburg, New York, jointly with the members of the clergy in attendance at the three day clergy retreat of our Archdiocese.
His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim opened the meeting with a prayer asking the Almighty to bless those present, reaffirming that we all have been chosen to be stewards in the service of our Holy Church, and that this in itself is a true blessing.

This year the Service of Pardon, which is celebrated on the first day of the Great Lent, was held at St. Mark’s Cathedral with His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim officiating. The Archbishop was assisted by Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun, Very Rev. Fr. Shamoun Asmar, Rev. Fr. Aziz Hadodo, and Rev. Fr. Alan Shaltan. The evening service was well attended by congregants from the four local parishes with deacons from the same serving the altar.

On Friday, March 9, 2012, His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim received The Honorable Congressman Scott Garrett at the Archdiocese Complex in Teaneck. Opening the hour and a half program with a prayer, His Eminence asked the Almighty Father to bless those who are in the service of this Country, that they may be given the strength and courage to lead this wonderful Nation with foresight and wisdom. It is with deep sorrow that we report the passing away of Pope Shenouda III, the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, on Saturday, March 17, 2012. Hany Aziz, Pope Shenouda’s political advisor, reported the 117th Pope of Alexandria, passed away at the age of 89 “due to health complications and old age”.
He was ordained a monk in 1954 taking on the name Father Antonios el-Syriani. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1962 and enthroned as Pope of Alexandria in 1971.

A memorial service for His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, hosted by the Coptic Orthodox Archdiocese of North America was held at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church in East Brunswick, New Jersey on Sunday, March 25, 2012.

It has been one year since the unrest in Syria began. Members of our Syriac Orthodox Church, like all the citizens of Syria, are going through difficult times. Residents of the city of Homs are especially affected. So far more than two dozen Suryoye have been killed and hundreds of families forced to flee their homes and take refuge with other family members and friends in the surrounding villages.
