2012 Suryoyo Family Day
In what now has become an annual tradition for the Archdiocese, this year’s Suryoyo Family day drew close to 700 people to what turned out to be a magnificent summer outing held on Sunday, July 15th, the feast day of St. Kiriakos and his mother St. Juliette.
This year the Holy Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence Archbishop Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak, Patriarchal Office Director, and guest of our Archdiocese; assisted by our beloved Archbishop, His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim. Also present were Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Shabo, Rev. Fr. George Somi, Rev. Fr. Aziz Hadodo, Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun and Rev. Fr. Eli Shabo. The breathtaking altar was further decorated with many young newly ordained deacons from our local parishes all who were given parts of the Liturgy to recite and participate in.
The sermon was delivered by His Eminence Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim. The Archbishop welcomed Mor Dionysius Jean Kawak noting that he is no stranger to the Archdiocese, having served the Washington DC parish of St. Aphraim as pastor for several years. His Eminence also took the opportunity to thank Biniamin Malki for single handedly making the arrangements and making the preparations for the picnic. He praised Biniamin Malki for all that he does and continues to do for the Archdiocese. In his message, the Archbishop spoke about the importance of family and the attention that must be given to our young people during the early years of their youth. He noted that parental obligation is real in setting the right example at all times. He continued, saying keeping God and daily prayer in our life is the key to a happy, rewarding and fulfilling Christian existence.
After the Liturgy the music and fun began. Gabriel Bar-Sawme, Archdiocesan Youth Director, coordinated the games and sports activities for the youngsters. The fun continued for the duration of the day. It was truly a magnificent day in all aspects. We thank the Almighty for the camaraderie, love and harmony that exists in our community.
