On Sunday, December 25th, 2024, His Eminence Mor Dionysius John Kawak celebrated the Holy Liturgy at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Paramus, New Jersey, assisted by V. Rev. Fr. Joseph Chamoun, in the presence of V. Rev. Fr. Joseph Shabo. In his sermon, His Eminence spoke about Immanuel “God with us.” His Eminence began his address by extending heartfelt Christmas greetings to His Holiness, our beloved Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, and to all members of the Holy Syriac Orthodox Synod of Antioch. He also expressed his wishes for a blessed and healthy Christmas to V. Rev. Fr. Chamoun, the deacons, the Parish Council, and all those who serve the vibrant ministries at St. Mark’s Cathedral.
Reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas, His Eminence emphasized the fulfillment of God’s promise to dwell among His people through the birth of Jesus Christ. The name “Immanuel” which signifies God’s presence with us, offering hope, salvation, and eternal life. His Eminence reminded the faithful that the Nativity is not simply about God coming to visit, but about God coming to stay with us in the fullest sense. He spoke of Christ’s humble entry into the world a child born in a manger, fully human and fully divine. He also told the faithful that the message of Immanuel does not end with the Nativity. Christ promised His presence to His followers for all time, saying, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
Finally, His Eminence called the faithful to respond to this divine gift of Immanuel with lives of worship and service. Just as the shepherds and wise men came to adore the newborn King, we, too, are invited to bring our hearts before Him in faith, trust, and thanksgiving. In his conclusion, His Eminence reminded the congregation that the joy and peace of Christmas are rooted in the presence of Christ, who came to be with us and to offer us salvation. He urged all to keep in mind the suffering of our Suryoye brothers and sisters and others in the Middle East during this holy season, praying for their comfort and peace.
