His Eminence Mor Dionysius John Kawak paid a pastoral visit to St. Matthew the Hermit Syriac Orthodox Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan, on the occasion of the parish’s annual festival celebrating the Feast of St. Matthew the Hermit. On Friday and Saturday, September 19 & 20, 2025, he participated in the parish festival’s activities, bringing together clergy, faithful, and church friends for fellowship, prayer, and celebration in honor of their patron saint.
On Sunday, September 21, His Eminence celebrated the Holy Liturgy at St. Matthew Church, assisted by the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Daniel AlKass, the deacons, and the choir. During the Holy Liturgy, Archbishop Kawak ordained a group of parish children and youth as new singers and readers, encouraging them to dedicate their talents to the service of our Lord. He reminded them and their families that service in the Church is both a blessing and a responsibility, requiring humility, faith, and steadfast commitment.
In his sermon, His Eminence reflected on the Gospel of the day where our Lord commands His disciples to remain spiritually watchful: “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.” His Eminence emphasized that Christian watchfulness is not about fear of the unknown but about readiness and living each day in faith and love since the Word of God never passes away.
Speaking directly to the newly ordained deacons, His Eminence urged them to embody this spirit of vigilance, keeping their hearts with prayer and their hands ready for service in the house of God. He also encouraged all the faithful to remain awake to the presence of Christ in their daily lives, dedicating themselves to prayer, service, and works of love. The Holy Liturgy concluded with appreciation from His Eminence to Rev. Fr. Daniel AlKass, the parish council, deacons, choir, and the entire St. Matthew the Hermit parish for their warm hospitality and devotion. The faith expressed great joy in receiving their shepherd, whose visit brought renewed strength and blessing to the parish during their annual celebration.
